1 Relaxations of combinatorial problems via association schemes

چکیده
Semidefinite programming relaxations of combinatorial problems date back to the work of Lovász [17] from 1979, who proposed a semidefinite programming relaxation for the maximum stable set problem which now is known as the Lovász theta number. More recently, Goemans and Williamson [9] showed how to use semidefinite programming to provide an approximation algorithm for the maximum-cut problem; this algorithm achieves the best known approximation ratio for the problem, which is moreover conjectured to be the best possible ratio under the unique games conjecture, a complexity-theoretical assumption (cf. Khot, Kindler, Mossel, and O’Donnell [12]). The usual approach to obtaining semidefinite programming relaxations of combinatorial problems has been via binary variable reformulations. For example, the convex hull of the set {xx : x ∈ {−1, 1} } is approximated by the convex elliptope

Quality of LP-Based Approximations for Highly Combinatorial Problems
We study the quality of LP-based approximation methods for pure combinatorial problems. We found that the quality of the LPrelaxation is a direct function of the underlying constrainedness of the combinatorial problem. More specifically, we identify a novel phase transition phenomenon in the solution integrality of the relaxation. The solution quality of approximation schemes degrades substanti...
متن کاملA Deterministic Multiple Key Space Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks via Combinatorial Designs
The establishing of a pairwise key between two nodes for encryption in a wireless sensor network is a challenging issue. To do this, we propose a new deterministic key pre-distribution scheme which has modified the multiple key space scheme (MKSS). In the MKSS, the authors define two random parameters to make better resilience than existing schemes. Instead of a random selection of these parame...
متن کاملManipulating MDD Relaxations for Combinatorial Optimization
We study the application of limited-width MDDs (multivalued decision diagrams) as discrete relaxations for combinatorial optimization problems. These relaxations are used for the purpose of generating lower bounds. We introduce a new compilation method for constructing such MDDs, as well as algorithms that manipulate the MDDs to obtain stronger relaxations and hence provide stronger lower bound...
متن کامل1 Parallel Semidefinite Programming and Combinatorial Optimization STEVEN
The use of semidefinite programming in combinatorial optimization continues to grow. This growth can be attributed to at least three factors: new semidefinite relaxations that provide tractable bounds to hard combinatorial problems, algorithmic advances in the solution of semidefinite programs (SDP), and the emergence of parallel computing. Solution techniques for minimizing combinatorial probl...
متن کاملCsc5160: Combinatorial Optimization and Approximation Algorithms Topic: Semidefinite Programming 22.1 Semidefinite Programming Problem
In this lecture, we provide another class of relaxations, called Semidefinite Programming Relaxation. These serve as relaxations for several NP-hard problems, in particular, for problems that can be expressed as strict quadratic programs. The relaxed problems, together with techniques like randomized rounding, give good approximation algorithms to hard combinatorial problems. We will illustrate...
